ABSAR is heading back to Barbuda this morning to assist with the mandatory evacuation of Barbuda, ahead of Hurricane Jose's expected arrival tonight. Yesterday we accompanied Shannon Falcone's "Exile Explorer" in bringing medical, firefighting and search and rescue personnel and supplies to the island. The airport fire station is serving as the main base of operations and as a makeshift hospital. Shannon's boat had to anchor offshore while the ABSAR boat was used to shuttle personnel and supplies through the newly cut split and across the lagoon to the Codrington dock. We brought 17 residents back to Heritage Quay where some were met by family and friends and others were taken to temporary accomodations. Critical medical patients have been medivaced by helicopter and others by boat. The Fire Department began going door to door to begin their search and rescue efforts. ABSAR was able to donate a significant amount of medical supplies yesterday. Before leaving the dock, many in our community contributed water, food and clothing which was much appreciated. ABSAR has created a Barbuda Relief Fund and donations can be dropped off at our medic station. Club Sushi is hoping to organize a fundraiser for Barbuda in the next few days, but we obviously need to get through Hurricane Jose first. We will keep you posted.
